World Cup: England Boss Southgate Names Captain
England manager, Gareth Southgate, has named Tottenham forward, Harry Kane as England’s captain for this summer’s World Cup.
Kane had shared the armband with the likes of Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Jordan Henderson of Liverpool in recent months, as Southgate pondered who would lead the side in Russia.
But Kane has been given the nod by the Three Lions boss, who is aiming for a successful first tournament in charge of the side.
England made the announcement on Twitter, revealing, “It’s confirmed. @HKane will be our captain for the @FIFAWorldCup.”
Tottenham Hotspur were then quick to congratulate their forward, tweeting soon after, “Captain Kane! @HKane will lead @England at the @FIFAWorldCup this summer! #OneOfOurOwn”
Speaking at a press conference held at St. George’s Park, Southgate said, “Harry has some outstanding personal qualities.
“He is a meticulous professional and one of the most important things for a captain is that they set the standard every day.
“He has belief and high standards and it is a great message for the team to have a captain who has shown that it is possible to be one of the best in the world over a consistent period of time and that has been his drive.
“Harry will need the support of the other good leaders we’ve got around him.
“You don’t become a top team by just having a good captain with good values.
“That has to spread right throughout the group but I think he’s the one ready to take that challenge on.”
